County Volumes / Pollbooks

Pollbooks are an invaluable source of information for local and family historians, and may be used in a variety of ways, eg. for the study of social and political history, for tracing the distribution of family names and other genealogical purposes. The Yorkshire Pollbook 1807, for example, identifies over 23,000 Yorkshire freeholders who voted in that year, giving their names, residences, freeholds, occupations and votes. Very few copies of pollbooks have survived. A number have been published in the Raymonds Original Pollbooks series; these cover London and Westminster, Norfolk, Suffolk, and Yorkshire. There are also two Somerset electoral registers for 1835 in this series. The prices of all of these volumes have now been drastically reduced, making them much more affordable. A number of Cambridgeshire pollbooks published by Spindrift are also available.
