The society is based in the North East of England and covers the South Durham, Cleveland and North Yorkshire area. The aim of the society is to promote the study of genealogy and to educate the public therein. The society holds regular meetings by Zoom, organises family history days, encourages research and facilitates the sharing of information amongst members. The society offers publications that will be of benefit and interest to family historians.

The society publishes a region related journal four times a year and copies are sent to all members.
