The Metropolitan Borough of Calderdale lies in the western part of the modern county of West Yorkshire. The district of Calderdale approximates very nearly to that which was covered by the ancient parish of Halifax, but with the addition of the township of Todmorden and Walsden. The ancient parish of Halifax covered 124 square miles (reputedly the largest in England) and was divided into 23 townships, stretching from the Lancashire border in the west to Brighouse in the east. Today Calderdale comprises the modern day towns of the Upper Calder valley, from Todmorden in the west, through Hebden Bridge, Sowerby Bridge, Halifax, Elland, to Brighouse in the east.
