A lot of people know Dartmoor Prison through Arthur Conan Doyle’s book The Hound of the Baskervilles, which builds a very bleak picture on this establishment. In reality this was not so very different than it was, at that time, in the nineteenth century. Even today when the prison is much more accessible it is still a forbidding place, even in bright sunshine. This book published in 1907 is a thorough history of the prison on Dartmoor up until this date.
