In the year of 1641 it was demanded that every man over the age of 18 should make an oath was to follow the “true Protestant religion”. These are now called the Protestation Returns and form a valuable list of inhabitants of a parish at this time. Not everyone signed and those who did refuse are also sometimes noted. Whilst only about a third of Somerset parishes have survived ( 161 ) it still lists over 22,000 names and is an important Somerset reference work which will be of great use to Genealogists and Family Historians. It is in Adobe Acrobat format and so can be easily searched and read on most computers. A must for anyone with Somerset Ancestors.
