Sydney Smith's West Kent Marriage index 1538 - 1812
In 2013 Sydney Smith generously offered the society his index to marriages that took place in West Kent between 1538 and 1812. The index comprised some 160,000 slips contained on 5" x 3" slips in over 40 index drawers filed by male surname. The slips were scanned and then typed by volunteers from the society.
About the Index
The Marriage Index, containing all known marriages between in 133 churches and chapelries, was compiled over a period of 15 years from 1976 to 1990. It covers all those parishes in the ancient Diocese of Rochester, including the Deanery of Shoreham, i.e. the whole of Kent, west of the Medway, including the large Medway towns of Chatham and Rochester, and all those parishes up to Deptford in South East London. There are also a substantial number of "out of county" strays.
The marriages have been taken from a number of sources, including transcripts, BT's, various printed sources, and some Licences, as well as the original registers. It must be remembered that the index was primarily designed as a "finding aid", and the entry should be checked in the appropriate register. However, each entry contains all the relevant details from the parish register entry. Widows are shown, as are places of abode (other than "of this parish"), whilst marriages by Licence are noted as such. Only the names of witnesses and Ministers were not included.
