Monumental inscriptions for the former parish church of St Mary, Chatham. Recorded in 1946, 1959, 1986 and 1994-95. After the opening of Chatham Cemetery in 1869 there were fewer burials in the church yard, the last burial took place in 1897 according to the register. In 1946 the Borough Surveyor of the former Chatham Council drew up a plan of the churchyard, numbered all surviving monuments and a list of names and dates was made. In 1959 some 200 headstones were moved to new positions on the south and west walls. In 1986 volunteers from the Society began to transcribe all legible inscriptions, the work was completed in 1994-1995. Many headstones will no longer survive. A transcript of burials in Chatham Cemetery 1869-2020 is available. Also on sale are the monumental inscriptions for Chatham Cemetery both the Maidstone Road site and the later extension in Palmerston Road and what is now called the Town Hall Gardens in Chatham, originally an extension to St Mary’s churchyard.
