CD13 Wiltshire Confirmations 1703-1920

Description

The confirmations in this publication, with the exception of Bromham, which is still held by the Church, are deposited in Wiltshire & Swindon History Centre.

Over 3,000 records, all for the year 1787, are in the Diocesan records. The rest are in the parish records, some of which are in specially printed books and a few in parish registers. Candidates may not have been confirmed in the parish where they lived, because several parishes may have gathered at one church for the Bishop's visit. In parishes such as Collingbourne Ducis and Shrewton the records include people from the surrounding parishes.

The index gives the name of the candidate, age if given, the year of confirmation, the parish (probably where the person was prepared for confirmation). Other details include information such as: date and/or place of baptism; and later additions such as reason why confirmation did not take place; married name of women; place of employment;; destination when leaving the parish.

The name of a parish, other than where confirmed, is often recorded, often without indicating whether the person is living there or it is their place of birth.

Details of service may be given for young men confirmed just prior to 1914 serving First World War, and injury or death, although some only have RIP without a1ny date.
