As the title suggests, this book focuses on the accidents that befell the coal miners of the East Bristol and South Gloucestershire coalfields. Chapters 4 and 5 (entitled 'Killed in a Coalpit' and 'Some Lucky Escapes?' respectively) provide an alphabetical list of the miners involved in accidents and a description of their injuries. Chapter 6 (entitled 'Heroes: For Each One Rescued, A Rescuer') tells the story of their rescuers who were not prepared to let their mates 'bide there and die'.
The book contains the names of over 2000 miners and is well illustrated with photographs, drawings and newspaper articles. Although focusing on the accidents, other chapters provide an additional insight into the miners' lives and the dangerous world of coal mining. Hardback, 262 pages.
