CD14 Wiltshire Non-Conformist Index
Description
This publication is a re-release of previously published information. Volunteers are currently revising and adding in additional material from other sources for non-conformist records held in Wiltshire. There is considerable work to be completed and although it is hoped to be able to publish this in the future, no publication date can yet be proposed.
The registers of the Wiltshire nonconformist chapels deposited at the Public Record Office (now TNA) and listed in class RG4 were transcribed some years ago by Edward Bryant. The typescript and slip index created are held by Wiltshire Family History Society. All the transcribed information has now been entered into a fully searchable computer database. Two batches of entries missing from the typescripts, all the marriages at Tytherton and some burials at Devizes, St Mary’s chapel, are now included. References to all the RG4 piece numbers have been added.
The database includes all the deposited registers used by congregations within the present day area of Wiltshire before the start of civil registration in 1837. The following two pieces in PRO class RG4 are NOT included.
- RG4 3044 Kingswood (Independent), because it was a detached area within
- Gloucestershire and RG4 2629 Swindon (Wesleyan), because it is post 1837.

The transcripts are presented in a public domain format (pdf) file which can be read by the program Adobe Acrobat Reader or any other program that will read pdf files. Searching can be undertaken by using the built in Adobe Reader search facility. Windows users can use bookmarks to drill down to individual index entries or to the nearest year for events in the transcripts. For Apple Mac users the file should open in Preview. Click the View button and select Table of Contents. The ability to print has been disabled but copying has not. As with any transcript users are advised to consult the original material, which is at the Wiltshire and Swindon History Centre.
