CS128 Broad Town Charity Apprentices

Description

Softback, 195 pages. THE BROAD Town Charity was conceived by Her Grace Sarah Duchess Dowager of Somerset in her Will dated 17th May 1686, the object being to pay for poor boys to become apprenticed to honest trades and callings. The Duchess bought an estate at Cotmarsh in Broad Hinton so that the rents and profits from it could be used for the apprenticing of four boys from the Manors of Broad Town, Thornhill, Froxfield, Wootton Rivers and Huish. She also gave to the Trustees her Manor of Broad Town with all her messuages, farms, lands, tenements and heriditaments in that Manor so that rents and profits from it could be used to apprentice any poor boys of Wiltshire, subject to certain specified rules: 1. No poor boy should have more than £20 to bind him apprentice 2. No boy to have any advantage of this Charity whose parents were in possession of £20 a year Freehold Estate. 3. No boy to be under 12 years of age (13 from 1741) or over 17 years. 4. No boy to be apprenticed to his father.
